Popularly known as St. Mary’s Gunadala Matha Shrine, the Gunadala Matha Church is situated on a hill in the Gunadala area of Vijayawada in the Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh. Mother Mary, on 11 Feb.1858, is said to have appeared on this hill.

History of Gunadala Matha Shrine Vijayawada:

The Gunadala Matha Shrine Vijayawada, or Mary Matha Shrine, popularly known as St Mary ‘s Church, is located in the Krishna district near Vijayawada in a hilly area of Gunadala. As an unusual distinction from the temple, an iron cross, erected atop the hill, stands.

Another highlight is a museum inside the Gunadala Matha Shrine, with a collection of precious gifts from devotees and ancient holy relics.

From the early hours of the second day of the three-day ‘Gunadala Matha Festival‘ on Feb 9,10,11, the rush of devotees at Gunadala Matha shrine picked up. From the early hours, pilgrims arriving from faraway places by buses and trains started to enter the Bishop Grassi High School campus and the rush continued until late in the night.

At the improvised dais on the high school playground, where people attended in large numbers, special prayers were carried out. The prayers were attended by pastors from various churches from different parts of the state. For the general, religion-based cultural programmes have been carried out.

Outside the Gunadala Matha Shrine Vijayawada, roads were full of people, even as beautiful vendors tried to find room to travel from one end to the other to do some fast business. As the police placed restrictions on the setting up of roadside stalls, vendors became mobile.

As the healing prayers were scheduled for Thursday along with the three-day Gunadala Mary Matha Festival valedictory, the Gunadala Matha Shrine authorities and the police are anticipating a big rush from midnight on Wednesday and have made arrangements accordingly.

Gunadala Matha Festival:

The Gunadala Matha Festival was good and this festival was attended by more than 10 Lakh devotees and all went well without any problems. Just 60 percent of those 10 Lakhs were Catholics, meaning 4 lakh remaining individuals are mixed people from various sects (Hindus, Muslims) and Protestants, of course.
