 Sri Kukkuteswara Swamy Temple Pithapuram:

The ancient temple of Lord Shiva, the Kukkuteswara Temple(Pithapuram Temple), stands in the Pithapuram, East Godavari region of Andhra Pradesh.Located 20 Km from Kakinada and 75 Km from Rajahmundry, it is considered one of the 18 Shakti Peethas in India.When you reach the temple, complete the pradishana and come in front of the Dhwaja Stambha, you will be drawn to the Yaka Sila Nandi (Single Stone Nandi). The Yaka Sila is the second largest after the Lepakshi Basaveshwara Nandi.

Pithapuram Kukkuteswara Temple History:

According to “Bhimeswara Puranam” by Srinath Kavi Sarvabhuma, Pithapuram is one of twelve pilgrims (Dwadasa Punya Kshetram). The sage said that Pithapuram was equal to Kasi and also known as Southern Kasi (Dakshina Kasi).

For the well-being of the gods, and at the request of Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma, Lord Shiva took a cock to kill the demon Gayasura. According to the blessing given to Gayasur by Trimurthys Lord Shiva, the cock after Gayasur ‘s death was transformed into Shiva linga. He is being worshiped as Sri Kukkuta Lingeswara Swamy in this holy place of Pithapuram.
