Manakula Vinayagar Temple History:

The Temple of Manakula Vinayagar, in Puducherry, is a grand and majestic temple dedicated to the lord Ganesha of India. Puducherry may be a place full of churches but Manakula Vinayagar Temple is highly coveted by Hindu devotees and tourists who travel from all over the country. Ageing over 500, it has an impressive history and is one of the region ‘s oldest temples.

Festival:

The Arulmigu Manakula Vinayagar Temple derives its name from two Tamil words Manal meaning ‘lake’ and Kulam meaning ‘water proximity pool.’ The temple had earlier been identified by the name Manal Kulathu Vinayagar. A variety of festivals and celebrations are held throughout the year in the temple, but the most important is Brahmothsavam, a 24 day long festival.

While we haven’t heard of a Vinayaka night shrine in any city, there is one in the Vinayagar city in Manakula. He stays with his consorts in this place. The idol that was brought to this shrine, called Palliyarai, will have only part of the feet. Vinayaka on the Well: The stage set for the god (peetam) is in a well that many do not know about. This could be a tank, or even a well.On the left side of the peetam runs a six-inch circular hole, whose depth could not be measured and it is always complete.

Golden Chariot:

The golden chariot was created solely from a collection of devotee donations. The total gold weight used in this chariot is 7.5 kg with an estimate of roughly Rs.35 lakhs. Chariot height & width is 10 ft & 6 in. The chariot was made entirely of teak wood lined with copper plates appropriately engraved with beautiful works of art and the plates properly fitted with golden rakes.

The running of the mentioned Golden Chariot was conducted at first in a grand manner on 05-10-2003. Most of the devotees are currently very interested in fulfilling their prayers by pulling the Golden chariot inside the temple on payment of fixed fees.

Thollaikathu Siddhar:

Close to 300 years before a saint standing 6 ft tall, wide forehead, glittering blissful eyes, big hole bearing face, small pot bellied with hand reaching up to knee cap and hands with lotus regai, guru medu and sanimedu at a height displaying arul gnana ragai. Through this lord he gained liberation and attained Samadhi in this temple.
