Prakasam Barrage History:
The idea of building a Prakasam Dam over Krishna River dates back to 1798. It started in Captain Buckle ‘s hands and was revised by Captain Best and Captain Lake in 1839 and 1841. On 5 January 1850 it was accepted by the board of directors of the East India Company after Major Cotton ‘s endorsement.
In 1852, the Prakasam Dam was initiated and completed in 1855. In those days, it cost Rs 1.75 crore and seems to have paid a return of 18 per cent to the then government. It used to irrigate 7 lakh acres. Later, a bridge named after Tanguturi Prakasam, Andhra’s first Chief Minister, was installed by the state government.
Completed in 1957, it enables over 1.2 million acres of land to be irrigated. This Vijayawada Prakasam Barrage also provides water to the Buckingham Canal, which was originally built as an inland navigation canal, but was later used as a water supply canal for irrigation. The Vijayawada Prakasam Barrage was one of South India’s first major irrigation projects and was fully successful in its mission.
Andhra Pradesh owes its rich agriculture largely to the Vijayawada Prakasam Barrage as the project enabled the irrigation of large tracts of agricultural land. The Barrage overlooks the bay. It has become a one of the Tourist Places in Vijayawada.Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu laid the foundation for the construction of a new barrage called Vykuntapuram Barrage on the Krishna River nearly 25 km upstream of the Prakasam Dam on 13 Feb-2019.
