Vijayawada Kanaka Durga Temple History:
The now-green Vijayawada was, according to legend, once a rocky area strewn with hills obstructing the flow of the Krishna River. Thus, the land was rendered unfit for habitation or agriculture. Lord Shiva’s invocation of his presence instructed the hills to make way for the river. And the river began to flow unimpeded with all its might, through the tunnels or “Bejam” drilled by Lord Shiva into the hills. This is how the place got its Bezawada name.
“One of the many mythologies associated with this place is that on top of Indrakila hill, Arjuna prayed to Lord Shiva to gain His blessings and after this victory, the city derived its name” Vijayawada. The victory of Goddess Kanakadurga over the demon King Mahishasura is another famous legend.The rising threat of demons is said to have become intolerable for indigenous people. Sage Indrakila performed extreme penance, and the sage pleaded with her to live on his head when the goddess appeared and to keep watch over the evil demons. Goddess Durga made Indrakila her permanent home in accordance with her wishes to destroy the demons.
The enchanting 4-foot-high (1.2 m) icon of the deity is coated in glittering ornaments and colourful flowers at the Kanakadurga temple. Here, her icon portrays her eight-armed form, each holding a powerful sword, standing over the demon Mahishashura and penetrating him with her trident. The goddess is the personification of beauty.
The shrine of Malleswara Swamy on the Indrakeeladri is adjacent to the Kanakadurga temple. By climbing the steps on the hill, one encounters small pictures of various deities, including Kanaka Durga, Malleswara and Krishna(River).
