Gorakhnath Mandir :

The Shri Gorakhnath Mandir is a Nath monastic order group temple in the Nath tradition. The name Gorakhnath is derived from the medieval saint Gorakshanath (circa 11th century), a yogi who traveled extensively throughout India and authored a number of texts that are part of the Nath Sampradaya canon.Guru Matsyendranath established the Nath tradition. This Gorakhnath math is housed in a large building in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, India. The Gorakhnath temple hosts a variety of cultural and social events and serves as the city’s cultural center.

Gorakhnath Mandir History :

Gorakhpur was named after Gorakhnath, a saint of the ‘Nath Sampradaya.’ In his honor, a shrine called Gorakhnath Mandir was built near where he performed his Sdhan.Gorakhpur is made up of the districts of Maharajganj, Kushinagar, Deoria, Azamgarh, Mau, Ballia, and parts of Nepal Terai. These areas, known as the Gorakhpur Janapad, were important centers of Hindu Vedic culture. In the sixth century BC, Gorakhpur was a part of the kingdom of Kosala, one of the sixteen Mahajanapadas. Lord Rama is thought to have been a member of the solar dynasty of Kshatriyas who ruled the area. Gorakhpur remained an important part of the Maurya, Shunga, Kushan, Gupta, and Harsha dynasties’ empires.

The history of the math is also described in Shantanu Gupta’s biography Yogi Adityanath – The Monk Who Became Chief Minister. Gorakhnath Mandir’s website describes its history as well as the attacks that the temple has endured from time to time.

Religious Activity at Gorakhnath ka Mandir :

Today’s Gorakhnath Math, centered in Gorakhpur in eastern Uttar Pradesh (also named after the saint), is a religious institution that operates two Gorakhnath temples, one in Nepal in the district of Gorkha (another word thought to be derived from Baba Gorakhnath), and the other a little south of Gorakhpur. The Gorakhpur temple is said to house Gorakhnath’s samadhi shrine and gaddi. These temples serve as the focal point for the majority of Hindu religious activity in this area.

On the occasion of Makar Sankranti, thousands of devotees flock to these temples to offer khichdi to Gorakhnath Baba. During this festival, the King of Nepal may also pay a visit to one of these temples.

The Gorakhnath Math has a sizable following in Nepal’s eastern Uttar Pradesh and Terai regions, as well as in larger circles across the Nath groups. According to the principles of saint Gorakhnath, the monastic order does not adhere to caste conventions as do other Hindu religious groups. As a result, non-Brahmins may serve as priests.

Yogi Adityanath is the current Mahant or Chief Priest. On September 14, 2014, he was appointed Mahant. His guru, Mahant Avaidyanath, died on September 12, 2014, and was given samadhi alongside his guru Digvijay Nath in the Gorakhnath Temple.
