Salar Jung Museum

The  Salar Jung Museum is an art museum in Hyderabad, Telangana, India, located at Dar-ul-Shifa on the southern bank of the Musi River. It is one of India’s most notable National Museums. Originally a private art collection of the Salar Jung family, it was bequeathed to the nation after Salar Jung III’s death. It was dedicated on December 16, 1951.

Sculptures, paintings, carvings, textiles, manuscripts, ceramics, metallic artefacts, carpets, clocks, and furniture from Japan, China, Burma, Nepal, India, Persia, Egypt, Europe, and North America are among the works on display. It is one of the world’s largest museums.

Salar Jung Museum History:

Nawab Mir Yousuf Ali Khan, Salar Jung III (1889-1949), a nobleman of the Salar Jung family of Hyderabad, served as Prime Minister of Hyderabad during the Nizam’s rule. Over the course of thirty-five years, he spent a significant portion of his income collecting artefacts from all over the world.

The collections were left behind in the Nawab’s ancestral palace Diwan Devdi after he died in 1949. The collection was previously displayed at the Salar Jung Museum, which was inaugurated by Jawaharlal Nehru on December 16, 1951.

According to historians, the current collection represents only half of the Nawab’s original art wealth. Because the Nawab relied on his staff to keep vigil, a portion of it was syphoned off.

Under the Salar Jung Museum Act of 1961, the museum relocated to its current location at Dar-ul-Shifa in 1968 and is managed by a Board of Trustees, with the Governor of Telangana serving as ex officio chairperson. More art pieces were lost or stolen during the museum’s relocation from Diwan Devdi to its current location.

The museum was designated a manuscript conservation centre in 2003 after signing a memorandum of understanding with the National Mission for Manuscripts.

In 2006, a fire broke out in the museum’s auditorium. It was quickly extinguished, however, and no artefacts were harmed.  Fire safety facilities were upgraded following the incident.
