Chottanikkara Temple – Timings, History, Pooja Online Booking

Chottanikkara Temple:

The Hindu mother goddess Bhagavati, also known as Mahalakshmi, is honoured in the Chottanikkara Temple. She and her husband Maha Vishnu are thought to reside in Chottanikkara. One of the most well-known temples in Kerala, India, is situated in Chottanikkara, a southern suburb of the city of Kochi in the Ernakulam district. Exorcisms are also performed in the temple.

Chottanikkara Bhagavathy Temple Architecture:

Along with Sabarimala Temple, the Chottanikkara Bhagavathy Temple stands out as the pinnacle testament of the old vishwakarma sthapathis (wooden sculpture). As the highest mother goddess of Hinduism and the goddess of Saraswathi, Lakshmi, and Parvati, Sree Mahamaya Bhagavati (Adi Parashakti) is one of Kerala’s most well-known goddesses. At the temple, Chottanikkara Devi (Melekavu Bhagavathi) is worshipped in three different guises: in the morning, as Mahasaraswati, dressed in white; in the midday, as Mahalakshmi, dressed in crimson; and in the evening, as Mahaparvati, dressed in blue.In this temple, worshippers used to chant “Amme Narayana, Devi Narayana, Lakshmi Narayana, Bhadre Narayana.” It is thought that Bhadrakali, in her ferocious or Ugra form, is the goddess referred to as “Keezhkkaavu Bhagavathi.” Bhadrakali, a manifestation of mother Kali, is said to have emerged from Lord Shiva’s third eye in order to kill the demon king Darika. People with mental problems frequently go to the temple because Chottanikkara Devi is reputed to heal her worshippers. Late-night rituals to call the goddess Mahakali are known as guruthi pooja. ‘Guruthi Pooja’ used to only be performed on Fridays. However, it is currently done every day.

Chottanikkara Temple History

The land where the temple is located was formerly covered in a thick jungle. In this woodland formerly resided a tribal member by the name of Kannappan. He offered a ceremonial buffalo sacrifice to the goddess Mahakali every Friday as part of his fervent worship (the day of the Goddess). He once discovered a calf close to a woodland. The calf was taken to his stone altar after being abducted by him. His daughter Pavizham intervened just as he was about to sacrifice the calf and begged him to stop. Because he cherished his daughter, he permitted her to keep the calf as a pet. Sadly, Pavizham passed away just a few days later, possibly from a snake bite.He was shocked to see his daughter’s body vanish. He learned the cause of the incident from a priest in the area; Kannappan used to kidnap young calves from their moms and sacrifice them. He suffered the same fate when his daughter passed away in retribution. The tribesman discovered the sacrifice alter glowing in its place when he went in search of the calf. The calf stood in for the union of Lord Vishnu and Lakshmi, the priest said. To atone for his transgressions, he requested that Kannapan offer daily prayers at the altar.

The stones had been forgotten ever since Kannappan’s passing. A low caste lawn cutter who had accidentally cut the stone recovered it again when she noticed that blood was dripping from it. She brought the situation to the public’s attention after being horrified by what she saw. The issue was resolved by contacting a local clergyman. It was determined that the stone was divine after devaprasnam. The first time puffed rice in a coconut shell was served to the Goddess that day by the senior Brahmin of the Yedattu household. This practice of serving puffed rice in coconut shells is still in use today. Since then, the Yedattu family Brahmins have served as the temple’s hereditary priests.
