Srikurmam Temple:

Srikurmam Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu located in Srikurmam, Srikakulam district in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The temple is one of the eight self-manifested shrines of Lord Vishnu and is classified as a Divya Desam, one of the 108 Vishnu temples that are mentioned in the works of the Tamil Azhwars. The temple is believed to have been constructed by the Eastern Ganga dynasty of Odisha around 11th century CE.

The temple is situated in a picturesque location, surrounded by lush greenery and the Bay of Bengal on one side. It is believed that the temple was built by Lord Vishnu himself and is one of the eight self-manifested shrines of the Lord. The main deity of the temple is Lord Vishnu in the form of Srikurmam. The temple complex also houses several other deities including Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Brahma, Lord Shiva, and Lord Ganesha.

The temple is known for its exquisite architectural beauty, with intricate carvings on the walls and pillars of the temple. It also has an elaborate system of tanks and ponds which add to the beauty of the temple. Devotees come to the temple to seek blessings of the Lord and participate in various festivals and rituals held throughout the year. The temple is also known for its spiritual and meditative atmosphere, making it a popular destination for devotees and tourists alike.

The only Indian temple known to exist before the fourteenth century that is devoted to the Kurma avatar is Srikurmam. Both a tortoise(srikurmam tortoise) sculpture and an anthropomorphic Vishnu and Lakshmi can be found in the sanctum of the Kurmanatha temple. In the Middle Ages, together with Simhachalam, the temple was a significant Vaishnav centre.

The temple is located 130 kilometres (81 miles) away from Visakhapatnam in the Gara mandal of the Srikakulam district. Srikurmam, which is thought to be the only temple in India where the Hindu god Vishnu is worshipped as a tortoise(srikurmam tortoise), is located 12.5 kilometres (7.8 miles) from the Suryanarayana temple in Arasavalli and 15 kilometres (9.3 miles) from Srikakulam town.

Srikurmam Temple History:

The temple’s inscriptional history dates back to the 11th and 12th centuries. Because it is a Vaishnavite temple, the temple is well known among the Tamil diaspora as well. With the help of the eastern Ganga king Anantavarman Chodaganga, the disciples of Ramanuja established Vaishnavism at the shrine.

In the middle ages, Srikurmam was recognised, along with Simhachalam and other places, as a significant Vaishnavism centre. The Ganga monarchs of Utkala also revered it as the Gurupitha, or “holy location of the teacher.” Madhvacharya’s pupil Naraharitirtha played a crucial role in establishing Srikurmam as the centre of Vaishnavite religious activity. Additionally, he defended the area from the Sabaras, a tribe of barbaric dwellers of the Ganjam jungles, who had come to assault. King, officials, and Vaishnavite devotees were persuaded by Srikurmam to change their names to reflect the religions they practised.

Naraharitirtha established the position of Bhoga Pariksha (religious head) as a result of his close relationship with the eastern Ganga monarchs in order to have the succeeding Madhwa saints oversee religious affairs and pray for the well being of the royal family and realm. In front of Srikurmam, Naraharitirtha eventually constructed a temple honouring Yogananda Narasimha. The Bhoga Parikshas are identified in the temple inscriptions as Narasimha Dasa Pandita and Purushottama Deva. Currently, the Gajapathi Rajus of Vizianagaram are in charge of Srikurmam.

Srikurmam Temple Tunnel:

On the northeast side of “pradakshana mandapam,” there is an underground tunnel. The tunnel enters or exits at Varanasi immediately (Kasi). Since there are snakes and wild animals all throughout the tunnel, the entrance is currently locked.
