Mehandipur Balaji Temple History

The history of the temple dates back to around 1000 years. Earlier there was a dense forest in place of the temple. Once, the ancestor of the present mahant (priest) of this temple, Ganeshpuriji Maharaj, had a dream, and he began to sleep. He reached a strange place where he saw thousands of lamps lit and an army. The army chief stopped at a place and paid homage to that place. After that the army left.

The frightened priest returned home. Then he had another dream in which he saw three gods and a magnificent temple. He also heard a voice telling him to serve the gods, but the priest ignored the dream. Thus, Lord Balaji appeared before him and ordered him to serve him.

The next day, the priest narrated his experiences to the villagers. The villagers dug in the place and found an idol of Lord Hanuman there. A small temple was built there and worship started.

Mehandipur Balaji Temple Architecture

The architecture of the temple is inspired by traditional Rajput architecture. The temple is divided into 4 sections, the first two sections have idols of Hanuman and Bhairava. It is believed that Hanuman can dispel any magical powers on earth. The third and fourth sections form the court of the Preth Raj (King of Ghosts), where people possessed by evil spirits are kept and treated by scholars. Such people are chained and beaten as part of treatment. This practice is followed to ward off evil spirits from the bodies of affected persons.
