Harihareshwar Temple – Maharashtra

Harihareshwar Temple is a city in Raigad district of Maharashtra, India. the temple is believed to be in the vicinity of three mountains namely Harihareshwar, Harshinachal and Pushpadri. River Savitri flows from the town into the Arabian Sea. Hence, this temple is often called Dev-ghar (or “House of God”. It is also known as “Dakshin Kashi”. The temple is believed to have been built in the middle of the medieval period, the main deity of this temple is “Kuldaivat” descended from the Peshwas who were the prime ministers of the larger Maratha Empire. 

Architecture of the temple 

The architectural style of this temple on Harihareshwar Hill is unique and attractive. Inside the main sanctum of the temple are idols of Shiva, Parvati, Vishnu and Brahma. Yogeshwari Temple is also nearby. A circular path goes around the temple, along the seashore. This route is not recommended during high tide.

There is also a huge boulder behind the temple which is divided into two parts. Bhima, one of the Pandava brothers, is believed to have split a large boulder into two pieces as he was on his way to the temple.

History of the  Harihareshwar Temple 

Believed to have been built in the late medieval period, the main deity of this temple is ‘Kuladaivat’, the chief minister of the great Maratha Empire, the Peshwas. Chandra Rao More built ‘Pradakshina Marg’ around the temple. Even in 1674, Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj visited the Harihareshwar temple. Later, the temple was completely restored in 1723 by Bajirao Peshwa I after it was almost destroyed by fire.

This temple opens daily on Morning at 04:00 AM and Closes Night at 10:00 PM.

October to February is the ideal time to visit the temple as the weather is pleasant and cool.

The nearest international airport to Harihreshwar is Mumbai Airport, which is about 195 km away. Pune Airport, about 175 km from the city, is also an option for travelers traveling by airways. Take a private cab or taxi to go further to Harihareshwar.

Mangaon is the nearest railway station to Harihareshwar, 60 km from the city. Trains from many cities in the country stop at Mangaon or Pune railway station. You can get down at any one of these stations and book a taxi to Harihareshwar.
