Brahmeswara Temple – Bhubaneswar 

Brahmeswara Temple is located in Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha in India. It is a Hindu temple whose presiding deity is Brahmeshwara, another name given to Lord Shiva, the Supreme Being of the Universe. The Brahmeswara temple represents a typical Hindu temple of the medieval period and is followed by the Shaivism branch of Hinduism. This temple is one of the famous temples in odisha.

The History of Brahmeshwar Temple is believed to have been built in the 9th century. However, according to the information available at the shrine, gathered from several sculptures, sculptures and inscriptions, the temple may have been built by Queen Kolavati Devi of the Somavamsi dynasty of Odisha in the 11th century.

She is said to have started the tradition of offering beautiful women called Devadasis to the Goddess. These women worship the deity and also perform music and dance to him. Glimpses of the Devadasi tradition can be seen in the inscriptions of the temple premises. It is also believed that Tantric religion was also practiced in the temple. The monstrous figures of Shiva and Chamunda carved on the walls of the temple bear witness to it.

The temple is built of stones in the traditional Kalinga style of architecture. The Architecture of Brahmeswara temple is classified as a Panchayatana temple where there are four subsidiary temples at the four corners of the main shrine. This pyramid shaped temple has two parts vimana and jagamohana. The plane of the temple is about 18.96 m. Iron rods were used by the builders during the construction of this temple. Jagamohana is famous for its lion head idols which were first found in Mukteshwar temple. The sandstone walls and interior wooden structures are worth mentioning.

The Brahmeshwar temple is famous for its artistic sculptures, especially the sculptures in the temple gopuram and porch. Tantric related images are also kept in this temple. The outer walls of the temple are decorated with figures of many gods and goddesses, carvings of birds, animals and some religious scenes. Shiva in the form of Nataraja, playing the veena on a bull, and lavishly jeweled female figures are carved.

Major Festivals Celebrated at Brahmeswara Temple 

Mahashivratri is the main festival celebrated in this temple every year with great pomp. On this auspicious day, a large number of visitors throng the temple and offer their prayers to the deity. Apart from the festival Mahashivratri, other festivals like Kartika Purnima and Diwali, Pongal and Ganesh chaturthi are also celebrated in the temple premises.
