Kollur Mookambika Temple:

The Kollur Mookambika Temple is situated in the Byndoor Taluk of the Udupi District in the Indian state of Karnataka. The mother goddess Mookambika is the object of devotion in this Hindu temple.

The merger of Adipara Shakthi and Parabramha is known as Mookambika, since the Linga has incorporated “Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi, and Maha Saraswathi” on its left side. The temple’s inclusion in the 108 Durgalayas and 108 Shivalayas makes it extremely unique. On the southern bank of the Souparnika River, it is located in the foothills of the Kodachadri highlands. Located between Gokarna and Kanyakumari, it is thought to have been made by the sage Parashurama.

The temple’s primary deity is a swayambhu (self-born) linga, which is divided in half by a golden line. The right half of the linga symbolizes their consorts, the male triad, the Trimurtis, while the left half represents the goddess triad, the Tridevis.

Despite the fact that the temple is in Karnataka, the majority of its visitors are from Kerala, a nearby state. It is also one of the most frequently visited shrines by Malayalis, or Keralans, regardless of caste or religion.

Kollur Mookambika Temple History:

The current Mookambika deity was created by Adi Shankaracharya in the shape of a devi. The linga is revered as Moola Devi, and Adi Shankara built a statue of the goddess with four arms. At one point, a demon tormented Sage Kola Maharishi as he was doing Tapas here. This demon had also been pleading with Lord Shiva for abilities that would grant him unstoppable strength and the ability to do anything he pleased. Devi Shakthi formed this demon Mooka (Dumb) since she knew his nasty mind. He could not, therefore, ask for a boon when Lord Shiva came before him. This infuriated the Demon, who then started to interfere with Kola Maharishi’s prayer to the Lord. Kola Maharishi prayed for assistance from the Divine Mother. Devi Shakthi therefore descended and defeated Mookasura, the Demon.

She became known in this area as Mookambika from that point on. The sage was also confronted by Lord Shiva. Maharishi Kola prayed for the Lord and His Consort to stay here indefinitely. A Jyotirlinga with a Swarnarekha (golden line) in the center materialized to fulfill his wish. Accordingly, the Creative Principle is represented by Parvati, Lakshmi, and Saraswathi, whereas the Conscious Principle is represented by Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma.

Here, Lord Shankara and Goddess Uma made their appearance and killed Mukasura. Combining Shiva and Shakthi, the goddess Mookambika takes the shape of Jyotir-Linga. As a result, the temple is included in both the 108 Durgalayas and the 108 Shivalayas of ancient Kerala.
