Thiruporur Murugan Temple:

Thiruporur Kandaswamy Temple, also known as Thiruporur Murugan Temple or Kanthaswamy Temple, is devoted to the Hindu deity Murugan and is located in Thiruporur, a panchayat town in the Chengalpattu district of the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The temple, which was built in the Dravidian architectural style, is thought to have been enlarged in the 18th century using the Thiruporur figures that were unearthed.

Chidambara Swamigal honors Kandaswamy in 726 verses. It is thought that a palm leaf is where the image of Muruga was found. Something that is said to have been the original palm leaf is kept at the shrine. Aruna Giri Naadhar, a saint from the 16th century, extolled the temple in Thiru Pugazh. Shiva, according to him, is the leader of all the Vedas, or holy writings. Kandaswamy is referred to as “Samara puri vaazh Shan mugatthu arase” by Bala Deva Raya in his works in Kanda Shasti Kavasam.

Thiruporur Murugan Temple History:

It is thought that the temple was constructed in the tenth century CE, during the Pallava period. The temple was renovated in the 17th century by Chidambara Swamigal, who is thought to be a descendant of the poets of the Sangam age. Archaeologists attempted to excavate a room in the temple in 2013, but they only found objects used in ceremonies and no archeological artifacts. Up to 36 acres that belonged to the temple in Thandalam that had previously been rented were retrieved from the land grabbers in 2013. The amount of the reclaimed land was ₹100 crores. The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Board of the Government of Tamil Nadu is currently in charge of maintaining and running the temple.

Legend:

Hindu mythology states that Murugan engaged in combat with demons in three different locations: the sea at Tiruchendur, the land at Thirupparankundram, and the air at Thiruporur. The sage Agastya is said to have stopped here on his journey to the Pothigai Hills. This location became known as Porur (por in Tamil means war) because Muruga defeated the Tharuka asuran. It is also known by other names, such as Tharukapuri and Samarapuri. There was a time when the area was flooded, according to the Sthala Puraanam. A divine voice urged Chidambara Adigal, a sage who lived in Madurai, to excavate the statue beneath a palm tree. He excavated the statue and erected a temple in its honor. He has his own shrine at the temple, and during the Vaikasi Visagam festival, he is treated with particular reference. He is shown uniting with the ruling deity during the festival’s final event.

The presiding deity is not ablated like in other temples since Kandaswamy’s image is thought to have formed on its own. Every ceremony is conducted on a yantra situated above a tortoise base.

The temple celebrates several important festivals, such as Vaigaasi Visaagam in May and June during the Tamil month of Vaigaasi, Maasi Bramorchavam in March during “Maasi” Month, Paalkudam / Paal Kaavadi Festival (Milk Pot) on Pongal (Tamil Harvesting Festival), Kandha shashti festival, and Nava rathri in October and November during Aippasi.
