Legend and History of Chintpurni Temple:
The 51 fragments of Maa Sati’s burning flesh that Lord Vishnu severed so that Lord Shiva would halt his Tandava and calm down were dispersed throughout the Indian subcontinent. This location is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas and is thought to be the location where Sati’s head is said to have fallen.
Chhinnamastika is another name for the deity who lives in Chintpurni. The goddess Chandi, according to the Markandeya Purana, slayed the demons in a bloody fight, but two of her yogini emanations, Jaya and Vijaya, were still ravenous for more blood. To satisfy Jaya and Vijaya’s craving for more blood, the goddess Chandi severed her own head from her body.
She is typically depicted holding her own severed head in her hand and sipping one stream of blood while two other naked yoginis drink another stream of blood from her neck’s arteries.

Puranic legends state that Shiva-Rudra Mahadev shall guard Chhinnamastika Devi from all four directions. Nearly equally spaced from Chintpurni are four Shiva temples: Kaleshwar Mahadev in the east, Narayhana Mahadev in the west, Muchkund Mahadev in the north, and Shiva Bari in the south. This also establishes Chintpurni as Chhinnamastika Devi’s residence.
It is commonly accepted that Pandit Mai Das, a Brahmin from Patiala Riyasat, built the Chintpurni mata shrine in Chhaproh hamlet about 12 generations ago. After the god who has the same name, this location eventually took on the name Chintpurni. His ancestors continue to reside in Chintpurni and participate in religious ceremonies at the temple there.
