Chandi Temple Legend & History

There is a strange legend associated with the Cuttack Chandi Temple. Lord Chandi was their deity during the mediaeval period during the Gajapati dynasty. When the region was invaded by non-Hindus, the king buried the goddess underground and fled to Puri.

As the years passed, the priest of the then king of Kanika used to graze his cattle shed in the barren land. After a hard day’s work, the priest Sri Hamsa Panda rested on a small mountain of dry soil. He asked Chandi Devi to take her out of the earth, the same night he randomly felt something strange and unusual. A startled Hansa Panda kindly recounted his experience. The king immediately undertook a task to dig up the waste land. About forty cartloads of vermilion powder were excavated and finally the main deity of Chandi Devi emerged. A temple was built to house the deity found in this area.

Priest Hamsa Panda started performing pujas as the primary priest of the temple. After his death his clan started following his footsteps and worshipped the temple with the same faith and trust as the late Hamsa Panda. He had a son named Sri Lakshmana Panda, who along with his daughters Champa, Mali, Tulsi and Malathi performed pujas. Devi answered the prayers of the Pandavas and blessed him with a son named Dayanidhi Panda. He had six sons who performed daily pujas. The present fourteen pandas are brothers who have carried on the work of their great-grandfathers.
