Chandrika Devi Temple History:
This three-hundred-year-old temple is famous for its Chandrika Devi, a manifestation of Goddess Durga. This location and the surrounding environs have religious significance and value dating back to the Ramayana. Also, it is known as Mahi Sagar Teerth. Both the Karma Puran and the sacred scriptures of Skand mention this temple.
According to legend, Rajkumar Chandraketu, the eldest son of Shri Lakshmana, the founder of Lucknow, was once traveling through Gomti riding an Ashwamegh horse. It got dark along the route, so he had to rest in the thick forest at the time. For protection, he prayed to the Goddess. The Goddess stood before him and gave him assurance as soon as the cool moonlight arrived. A large temple built here in that time period is supposed to have been destroyed by foreign invaders in the 12th century. It is also claimed that some local peasants discovered this lovely location, which was concealed by thick woodlands, some 250 years ago while they were wandering through the woods. The statue of Devi was found by a peasant the following day and erected in its current location. After learning of Ma Chandrika Devi’s presence, a temple was later built, and ever since, people have continued to visit and perform “Pooja” there. Another name for this location is Mahi Sagar Teerth.
Additionally, it is stated that during the Dvapara Yuga, Barbreek, son of Ghatotkach, received advice from God Shri Krishna regarding the Tirth in order to gain power. For three years in a row, Barbreek worshipped Ma Chandrika Devi here.
Numerous religious events are staged at the temple and surrounding grounds on the eve of Amavasya and Navratras. For Hawan (Yagya), Mundan, people travel from all across the state. Additionally, Kirtans and satsang (religious gatherings) are held during these days. Additionally, it was claimed that the Chandrika, or head ornament worn by ladies, fell here as part of Devi Sati.
