The Mellacheruvu Shivalayam Temple is one of Suryapet’s most well-known temples. Lord Shiva in the sacred form of Sambhu Lingeswara Swamy is the temple’s presiding deity. Lord Shiva is said to be self-incarnated in this place. The temple is thought to be at least a thousand years old, making it one of the state’s oldest Lord Shiva temples. The architecture of the temple represents the glory of the Kakatiya dynasty. A notable feature of the temple is a circular hole about 2 inches (5 cm) in diameter on top of the Shiva Lingam, through which water continues to flow. There is also a belief that the Shivalinga in the temple is growing in height.
The Kalyanotsavam is celebrated in a grand manner every year during Mahashivaratri, attracting thousands of devotees.
