Hassan is named after the presiding deity of the Hasanamba Temple. She is known as Hasanamba because she is always smiling and bestows all riches on her devotees. While she is revered for her goodness, she is also harsh to those who choose to harm her followers.

The temple is open to devotees for only ten days during Diwali and closes three days after Balipadyami. During Diwali, a large number of devotees flock here to seek blessings and catch a glimpse of the deity. When the temple is closed, devotees frequently offer raw rice and light a lamp. Many people claim that the rice never rots and that the lamp always burns until the following year when it is opened.

Hasanamba Temple Miracles :

Amma Hasanamba is said to have turned a mother-in-law who tortured Devi’s devotee (daughter in law) into a stone in front of her. It is believed that the stone moves an inch every year, and that when it reaches Hasanamba’s lotus feet, the Kali Yuga period will come to an end.

Devi once turned four robbers into stones after they attempted to steal Hasanamba’s jewels. These four stones can still be found in Kallappa Gudi.
