Ananta Vasudeva Temple – Bhubaneswar
Ananta Vasudeva Temple is one of the oldest and most famous temples in Bhubaneswar in the state of Odisha(Orissa), India. This temple is close to Bindu Sarovar and Lingaraj Temple. Dedicated to Lord Krishna, this temple is one of the few Vaishnava shrines in the city. The deities worshipped in this shrine are Lord Vasudeva (Krishna) , Lord Ananta (Balarama) and Goddess Subhadra ( Sister of Krishna).
The postures of the deities depicted in this temple are different from other temples. This is one of the main reasons why it has become one of the popular places to visit in Bhubaneswar.

The famous Hindu festival Janmashtami – Sri Krishna Janmastami which is also known as Krishna’s birthday and Diwali, Rakshabandhan is celebrated in great way at Ananta Vasudeva Temple. On this day the temple is beautifully decorated with flowers and lamps. The prayer chants and devotional songs heard in the premises make the atmosphere very spiritual. Thousands of devotees visit this temple on that auspicious day to worship Lord Krishna and offer milk, butter, sweets, curd and flowers to seek blessings of Lord.

There is no entry fee to visit Ananta Vasudeva Temple. The temple opens for devotees at 06:00 am in the morning and closes at 08:00 pm at night. This temple is open all days of the week for devotees.
Special feature about temple
One of the highlights of the temple is its kitchen, where Mahaprasad, popularly known as abhada, is prepared in clay pots using firewood and clay ovens. In this sacred temple food is served first to the deities and then offered to the devotees in the Bhoga Bazaar adjacent to the temple. The whole atmosphere is similar to Ananda Bazar in Puri Jagannath Temple.

Architecture of Ananta Vasudeva Temple
The architecture of Ananta Vasudeva Temple is very different from other nearby temples. The structure of the main building rests on a vimana stone platform and on it, three rooms namely Jagamohana, Natamandira and Bhoga Mandapa are constructed. The exterior and interior of the temple are designed with stone models of Hindu deities and women. Most of the idols of women carved on temple walls for decoration are said to have no originality. Still, the temple is visited today for its fascinating art and surroundings. The image on the wall of the temple depicts the legend of Lord Vishnu. Vishnu appears as one of his avatars, “Varaha”, his boar avatar with tusks. The motherland was submerged in the ocean so Varaha jumped into it and carried the earth with his two teeth and his big beak.
Legend & History of Ananta Vasudeva Temple
The Ananta Vasudeva temple was built by the queen Rani Chandrika. The temple is said to have been built in the 13th century and is part of medieval architecture. The year of construction of the temple is estimated to be 1278 AD. It is said that there was a Vishnu temple at the site of the Ananta Vasudeva temple. There was an image of Lord Vishnu in the old temple. Rani Chandrika got darshan to build the temple so the present temple was established. It was later improved by the rulers of the Maratha dynasty in the 17th century.
