Sri Malyavanta Raghunatha Swamy Temple – Hampi

Sri Malyavanta Raghunatha Swamy Temple is situated on Malyavanta Hill. This temple is dedicated to Lord Rama. This Malyavanta temple is located at a distance of 2.5km from Kamalapura bus stand and 6km from Hampi.

Legendary of Malyavanta Raghunatha Swamy Temple

The Malyavanta Raghunatha Swamy temple was built by the Krishnadevarayas of the Vijayanagara kingdom. According to legend, Ramachandra and his brother Lakshmana stayed here in search of Sita during the rainy season. The 16th century temple is built around a huge boulder in the Dravidian style of architecture. The east facing temple has a large pillared hall with a sanctum sanctorum, a mandapam, a large pillared mandapam and a large courtyard. There are two gopurams at the entrance of the temple.

In the main shrine there are idols of Rama, Lakshmana and Sita, close to which is a kneeling idol of Hanuman, all carved from a single stone. A void seen on the ground was filled with water, which Lakshmana made with his arrow. To the right of the temple is a cave temple dedicated to Lord Shiva with a small Shiva Lingam. The temple has carvings of fish and sea creatures along the outer walls. A steep road leads to the Raghunatha Swamy Temple, one of the few temples in Hampi that has been active since its inception. This temple is one of the ideal places to watch the mesmerizing views of the Sun Rising and sun setting between the huge boulders and monuments.

How to Reach Malyavanta Raghunatha Swamy Temple Distance

Bus: Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation ( KSRTC) Operates regular buses from the cities like Bangalore, Mysore, Gokarna to Hospet. From Hospet to Hampi there are local buses with the price of ₹20 per head.

Air: The nearest airport to Hampi is Belgaum Airport, which is about 270 km away. From there you can reach the city by taxi, which costs somewhere around Rs. 2500. Bangalore Airport is 350 km from Hampi.

Rail: Hampi does not have its own railway station and the nearest railhead to the place is 13 km from Hospet. The station has about 10 daily trains and about 5 special trains which ply once or twice a week. Bangalore to Hampi Express is the best option. Taxis are available from here to Hampi which cost around Rs. 300.

Boat : Most of the Guest houses are Located on the other side of the river which is also called as Virupapur Gadde. To reach the temple , people have to cross the river by motorboat with the price of ₹10 for locals, ₹15 for tourists, boat service is available from morning 06:00 AM to evening 06:00 PM.
