Tata Tea Museum Munnar

The KDHP Tea Museum is a business and historical museum located in Munnar, a town in the Kerala, South India, Idukki district. Its formal name is Tata Tea Museum, but it is also known as Kannan Devan Hills Plantation (KDHP) Tea Museum or Nallathanni Estate, the estate where it is situated.

Tea Museum Munnar History

The Kanan Devan Hills Plantations Company (P) Ltd. (KDHP) owns the tea farm; the plantation was established in the 1880s. On April 1st, 2005, the museum debuted. The tea museum maintains information on the origins and development of tea plantations in Kerala’s mountainous Idukki district, which is located on the Western Ghats and borders the Tamil Nadu district of Coimbatore.

Tata Tea established the museum, which displays artefacts, images, and tools illustrating a pivotal moment in Idukki’s thriving tea business. The museum, which was established at the Nallathanni Estate, is a tribute to the pioneers who turned Munnar into a significant tea plantation centre of Kerala, from a crude tea roller in 1905 to a completely automated tea factory. Visitors and tea enthusiasts can observe the various phases of tea processing—crush, tear, curl—and learn how Kerala black tea variants are made. The estate’s power production facility was built in the 1920s using a rail engine wheel from the Kundala Valley Railway, which began transporting passengers between Top Station and Munnar in 1924.

The tata tea museum also includes a section with antique bungalow furnishings and office supplies from Kerala’s Colonial period. Another draw in this area is tea tasting of various tea varieties. At the Periyakanal tea plantation, a burial urn from the second century was found; it is now on display at the museum.
