Keesaragutta Temple Story:
According to legend, Rama placed the lingam here to atone for the sin of killing Ravana, a brahmin by birth but a demon by nature. He chose this magnificent valley surrounded by hills and luscious greenery for the occasion and sent Hanuman to carry a lingam from Varanasi, Shiva’s favourite site. Hanuman was late in delivering the lingam, and as the auspicious hour approached, Shiva himself appeared before Rama and gave him a lingam for installation. As a result, the lingam in the temple is known as a Swayambhu Linga. It is also known as Ramalingeswara since Rama installed the lingam.
Hanuman returned from Varanasi with 101 lingams for selection and was irritated that his lingam had not been erected. As a result, he hurled them all over the place. Even now, many lingams may be discovered dispersed around the temple’s grounds. To this day, these lingams are worshipped alongside the lingam in the temple’s sanctum.
To appease Hanuman, Rama decreed that he would be given priority for temple worship. He also stated that the hill where the lingam would be put would be named Kesarigiri, which means Hanuman, the son of Kesari. It has been popularly altered over time and is now known as Keesara and the hill as Keesaragutta. Since then, the rites have followed Rama’s command.
