Ambernath Shiv Mandir – Maharashtra:

At Ambarnath, close to Mumbai, in Maharashtra, India, the Shiv Mandir of Ambernath is a revered historical Hindu temple from the 11th century. Locals refer to it as Puratana Shivalaya and also refer to it as the Ambreshwar Shiva Temple. 2 kilometres from Ambarnath railway station (East) it is located on the [vrindawan] (Waldhuni) river’s bank. The exquisitely carved stone temple was constructed in 1060 AD. The Shilahara monarch Chhittaraja most likely constructed it, however his son Mummuni may have renovated it.

Ambernath Shiv Mandir History:

Unusually, the sanctuary, or garbhagriha, is underground and may be accessed from the mandapa by taking around 20 steps down. It is open to the sky since the shikhara tower above abruptly comes to an end just a little bit above the mandapa’s height, and it appears that it was never finished. It is in bhumija shape and, if completed, would have resembled the Gondeshwar Temple at Sinnar and the Udayesvara Temple, also known as Neelkantheshwara Temple, in Udaipur, Madhya Pradesh, which was started in 1059.From what was constructed, it is evident that the shikhara would have followed these in having four corner bands of gavaksha-honeycomb sweep continuously up the entire height of the tower, while in between each face there are rows of five spirelets on each podia, which get smaller as you go up the tower.

The name Ambarnath, which means the Sky, denotes that the shikhar in this instance signifies the sky. The tower may not have halted suddenly because the shikhar in this instance is the sky.
