Bhimashankar Temple – Pune, Maharashtra:
The Bhimashankar Temple, also spelt Bhimashankar or Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga, is a Shiva mandir located in the Pune area of Maharashtra’s Bhimashankar village. It is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas in the globe and a significant pilgrimage site. The Shiva lingam in the temple is one of Maharashtra’s three Jyotirlingas. On a mountain is where the mandir is located. Pune is located 110 kilometres away.
Legend:
The shrine is connected to Tripura, a legendary asura. According to the legend, Tripura performed penance, and Brahma, pleased by Tripura’s penance, manifested and granted him three wishes. He had to be immune to the yakshas, gandharvas, demons, and gods, according to Tripura. He should be able to travel anyplace in the cosmos because his three “puras” are impenetrable. His every wish was granted. Tripura set out on a campaign of conquest to conquer three Loka. Additionally defeated was Indra, the god of the sky. Indra made the choice to undergo penance and ask for Shiva’s blessings. Shiva vowed to eradicate Tripura.
At the command of the Gods, Shiva is said to have taken the form of “Bhm Shankara” on the summit of the Sahyadri hills. The sweat that spilled from his body following the struggle is said to have created the Bhimarathi river.
Bhimashankar Temple History:
The Bhimashankar temple was constructed in the Nagrara style, which blends conventional and contemporary architecture. Nana Phadnavis of Peshwa built the temple hall during the 18th century.Nna Phadnavis constructed the temple’s gopuram-shikhara. King Shivaji gave the temple permission to use the village of Kharosi. The local population’s financial resources were used to pay for the daily religious observance.
Chimaji Appa gathered five large bells on May 16, 1739, after defeating the Portuguese from the Vasai Fort.
He offered one at Bhimashankar and the others at the Banshanker Temple in Pune, the Omkareshwar Temple in Pune, the Ramlinga Temple in Pune (Shirur), the Ramalinga Temple in Menavali, close to Wai, in front of a Shiva temple on the banks of the Krishna River.
Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga Architecture:
The usage of the Nagara style, which is prevalent in northern India, is what distinguishes Bhimashankar’s architectural design. The architecture of the structure bears some resemblance to the Hemadpanthi style, which is prevalent in the Deccan region.It is alleged that a Swayambhu Shiva Linga served as the foundation for the previous temple.
Furthermore, it is clear that the Ling is situated precisely in the Sanctum Sanctorum, or Garbhagriha, of the temple. The Indo-Aryan architectural style, which is frequently seen in Jain temples, is used to build the garbhagriha and antarala out of local stone. The temple’s pillars and door frames are adorned in beautiful sculptures of gods and people.
Nna Phadnavis designed and constructed the shikhara as well as the Sabhamandap in the 18th century. This temple was endowed by the Maratha King Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj to support religious ceremonies.

Devotees often visit the nearby temples to see the gods in addition to the Bhimashankar Mandir. The Siva Ganams, Shaakini and Daakini, who helped Shiva defeat the demon Tripurasur, have a shrine.

Mokshakund Tirtha is located behind the Bhimashankar shrine. Traditionally, one bathes in the kund before visiting the temple. Maha-muni Kaushika’s fabled penance performed here led to the creation of the kund. There are also the Jnyankund made by Dattatreya and the Sarvatirth associated with Bhashitadevi.
The Bhima River starts to flow eastward from Kusharanya tirth, which is situated south of the temple.
Within the temple’s grounds is a small shrine dedicated to Lord Shani.In front of the Bhimashankar Shiva Linga is a statue of Nandi.
The “Shani Temple” is located inside the Bhimashankar temple’s main complex.
A huge old Portuguese church bell may be seen in front of the “Shani” shrine between the two pillars. There is a small path that leads to the riverbanks behind the temple. A huge woodland region surrounds the temple, occasionally broken up by forts on surrounding slopes.
