History and Legend of Galtaji Temple

The magnificent pink sandstone structure is said to have been built by Dewan Rao Kriparam of Sawai Jai Singh’s court. From the beginning of the 16th century, Galtaji was a haven for Puritans of the Ramnadi sect and under the Jogi occupation. Saint Galtau is believed to have spent his entire life in this holy place, doing penance for a hundred years. Devas, pleased with his devotion, appeared before him and blessed his place of worship with abundant water. To worship this sage, the Galtaji Temple was built here and named after him. Legend has it that Tulsidasa wrote sections of the sacred Ramacharitra Manas at this place. It is said that Galav meditated here for many decades and was blessed with springs. This is also the reason why the temple complex is named after Maharshi.
