Kaila Devi Temple History:

The goddess Maa Kaila Devi is thought to be a manifestation of the same goddess, Maha-yogini Mahamaya, who was substituted by Lord Krishna at Lord Vishnu’s request as the child of Nanda-Yashoda. She changed into her Devi Roop when Kansa tried to kill the girl child, telling him that the victim was already alive and well. She is currently revered as Kaila Devi in certain places, as well as Vindhyavasini and Hinglaj Mata in others.

It’s an interesting tale about how the goddess’ visage ended up here. A Yogi baba was escaping from Nagarkot while pulling the statue on a bullock cart in order to preserve it. In the meantime, Kaila Devi came to the sage Kedargiri, assuring him that she would visit the locals. In the middle of the hill, amidst the deep jungle, the Yogi’s lone bullock became stuck and would not move. By divine decree, the location was chosen for the statue to be.

The Chandravanshi kings of Karauli have always had a strong bond with the temple thanks to Kaila Devi’s blessings.

The temple’s foundation was laid in 1723 by Maharaja Gopal Singh Ji, and construction was finished in 1730. He also put up the ChamundaJi statue, bringing it from the Gagraun fort where the Khinchi ruler Mukund Das Ji had put it in 1150.

One of the earliest significant man-made large-scale water sources in the region was a sizable Kund that Arjun Pal Ji constructed. The Kund still stands today.

Maharaja Bhom Pal Ji created a power plant and had upgraded roads built in 1927. Maharaja Ganesh Pal Ji renovated the temple’s interior and exterior in marble in 1947. The present Maharaja, Krishna Chandra Pal Ji, has also introduced numerous cutting-edge amenities and made a number of significant modifications. The administrative block, the staff quarters, the Annapurna Canteen, a sizable pandal for waiting pilgrims, and marked routes to implement lineups for darshan have all been added to the courtyard. There have been new dharamshalas established, including Ram Bhavan, Kansal Bhavan, and Mathurvaishy Dham, while several older ones, including Sita Bhavan, Ratan Devi, and the Dholpur Dharamshala, have undergone reconstruction.
