Sharavu Temple History:

Eight centuries ago, a cow was accidentally killed by an arrow shot by Maharaja Veerabahu, a great king of the Tulava region, according to a local tale known as the “Sthalapurana.” Actually, he intended to shoot the tiger that was adjacent to the cow. However, in order to atone for his unpardonable dreadful sin, he installed a “Shiva Linga” at the advice of the esteemed seer Sri Bharadhwaja.

The Maharaja has worshipped this Shivalinga as Sharabeshwara. Afterwards, this holy location was referred to as “Sharavu,” and the recently constructed temple tank as “Sharatheertha.”
