Ganesha, the elephant-headed Hindu god of wisdom, is the subject of the Vigneshwara Temple or Vighnahar Ganapati Temple in Ozar (also written Ojhar or Ojzar). The Ozar Ganapati temple is one of the eight famed Ganesha shrines in Maharashtra, India, known as Ashtavinayaka. The Ganesha form revered at this location is known as Vigneshwara (also spelt Vigneshvar, Vigneshwar: “Lord of Obstacles”) or Vignahar (also spelt Vignahara, “Remover of Obstacles”) and is linked to the myth of Ganesha overcoming Vignasura, the obstacle-causing demon.
Ozar Ganpati Temple History:
After capturing the Vasai Fort from the Portuguese, Chimaji Appa, the Peshwa Baji Rao I’s younger brother and military leader, restored the temple and decked the shikhara (temple spire) with gold. The Ganesha devotee Appa Shastri Joshi also refurbished the temple in 1967.
Despite being the fifth of the seven temples on the Ashtavinayak circle, Ozar is frequently visited by pilgrims since it is a more convenient path.
The Tamil Vinayaka Purana, the Mudgala Purana, and the Skanda Purana document: The sacrifice King Abhinandana made did not include any offerings for the god-king Indra. Indra, enraged, gave the order to Kala (Time/Death) to obliterate the offering. The demon Vignasura (obstacle-devil) or Vigna (obstacle), who inserted impediments into the sacrifice and wrecked it, is the shape that Kala assumes. He also wreaked havoc on the universe, impeding the sacrifices and good actions of saints and other living things. The gods Brahma or Shiva, when consulted by the sages, suggested they worship Ganesha. When Ganesha heard the ascetics’ plea, he started to fight the demon. The demon soon saw that he couldn’t win and gave up, promising to stop bothering the inhabitants of the world. Vigna (obstacles) were only allowed to reside in locations where Ganesha was not invoked or worshipped. According to certain interpretations, Ganesha, who would torment anyone who refused to worship his Lord, made the repentant Vigna one of his attendants. In order to remember the occasion, Vignesura asked Ganesha to adopt the name Vigneshwara (The Lord of Vigna/obstacles). To commemorate the occasion, the relieved sages dedicated a statue of Ganesha dressed as Vigneshwara at Ozar.
