Sthaneshwar Mahadev Temple History:

The ancient city of Sthaneshwar, now known as Thanesar or Kurukshetra city, had Lord Shiva as its patron deity. This temple is named for him. According to mythology, it dates back to the Mahabharata era. According to legend, Krishna and the Pandavas performed an abhishekam here to honour Lord Shiva and received his favour for success in the upcoming Mahabharata conflict. It is also believed that the Kauravas are composed of the deadliest astra, which can only be controlled by Lord Shiva, who is Mahakaal. Krishna specifically prayed O God ” Maheshwara,” I will protect pandavas (Dharma) in any situation, but there are some powerful Astras which I can’t.The Vardhana Empire of Thanesar was founded by Pushpabhuti, who gave Sthaneshwar Shiva the honour of having his capital named after him. According to legend, the current shrine was built by Sadashivrao Bhau, the Maratha armies’ commander-in-chief, to honour his victory over Ahmed Shah Abdali at Kunjpura before the third battle of Panipat.

Legend of this temple:

According to legend, the tank next to the temple’s water is blessed. The King Ban was cured of leprosy with a few droplets of water. This ancient, revered temple is considered to be a must stop on any pilgrimage to Kurukshetra. The town of Thanesar, which takes its name from this temple, is not far from the tank and temple. Additionally, it is thought that this is where Lord Shiva was initially worshipped as a lingam. On the banks of the Yamuna, Kuru—the forefather of the Mahabharata heroes—performed penance, and Parshuram, the legendary warrior sage, massacred numerous Kshatriyas in this area.

The town of Sthaneshwar served as the capital of Emperor Harshavardhana and is home to the temple of Lord Shiva. The temple’s dome-shaped roof is an example of local style in architecture. With a lofty pinnacle, the roof’s front is designed like an “amla.” Ancient and still held in high regard by the locals is the Lingam.
