Srikalahasti Galigopuram:
In 1516, an enormous gopuram was constructed by Sri Krishnadevaraya, a few feet away from the temple door. The temple entrance is crowned by a narrower tower. In the exterior, there is an underground shrine of Ganapati, while in the innermost there are the monuments of Shiva and Parvati. This ancient gopuram is sculpted over the primary door, 36.5 meters (120 feet) high and the whole temple is sculpted.
This temple’s original structure was built in the 5th century by the Pallava dynasty. Krishnadevaraya, the king of Vijayanagara in 1516, built the 120 feet (37 m) elevated primary gopuram and the 100 pillar mandapam.
Srikalahasti temple history (or) Srikalahasti Purana or Srikalahasti temple story:
The name Sri Kalahasti derives from the three unlikely but ardent devotees who sacrificed their life for Lord Shiva-‘ Sri ‘ for a Spider, ‘ Kala ‘ for ‘Serpent, and Hasti for Elephant. Each of the above has been engaged in their own ways with Shiva Pooja. The Elephant (Hasti) used to bring the water from the nearby river to Abhishek the Lord’s Linga.
To safeguard it from the natural components, the Spider (Sri) used to weave its powerful threads around the Linga. At this moment, Serpent (Kala) used to decorate the Shiva Linga with his beloved stone (Naga Manikyam). Once they crossed their routes, these three occurred.
The elephant regarded the spider’s action to be disrespectful to the god and splashed off the web of the spider with his water-filled trunk at once. The spider and serpent were angry at the destruction of their Pooja by the elephant. The serpent entered the trunk of the elephant and released its venom there … The elephant smashes its trunk against the Lingam in writhing-pain and kills the serpent. In this tussle, too, the spider dies. The death of poison-driven elephant follows.
The Lord Maheshwara gave Moksha’s to all three animals mightily pleased with this self-sacrifice. The spider takes birth as a wonderful king who continues his divine mission as the elephant and the serpent reach the heaven from their earthly cycle of life.
Another significant tale is that of Sri Kannappa Swamy, the devotee of Shiva, who belongs to the 63 sanities. It is said he saw blood springing from the eyes of the Lord Shiva. The Kannappa Swamy plucked his own eyes in despair and put him at linga. The Lord Shiva stopped him and gave Divya-Darshan as Sri Kannappa passed the divine test as he was about to tear down his other eye.
