Kondapalli Fort History:
During the 14th century, Prolaya Vema Reddy of the Reddi Kingdom founded this historical fort, also known as Kondapalli Quilla. Initially, it was designed as a leisure and business centre and later served as the British rulers’ military training base.
Kondapalli Fort Vijayawada was built in 1360 AD by Anna Vema Reddy, according to some other historians, after he captured Kondapalli from Mudigonda Chalukyas, the fort was home to many dynasties, from the Reddi rulers to the Nizam Nawabs, and then the Company of East India.
The Kondapalli Fort, which has a very picturesque view, has three gates of entry in succession. The ‘Dargha Darwaja’ is the main entrance gate constructed with a single block of granite. It is 3.7 m (12 feet ) wide and 4.6 m (15 feet ) high. Its name is derived from Gulab Shah ‘s tomb or dargah, who was killed here in battle. In addition to Darhgha Darwaza, on the other end of the hill, which leads to the village of Jaggaiahpet, there is another entrance gate called the Golconda Darwaza. The fortified wall has battlements and turrets.
The Tanisha Mahal, or Palace, is at the far end of the Kondapalli Khilla, situated on a crest between two hills. There were several rooms in the palace on the ground floor and an immense hall on the upper floor. In fact, there are several structures still standing in the fort, which are ruins.
There is a deep reservoir near the palace, the source of which is a spring. It is said that the water in the reservoir is very cold and induces a fever. The Kondapalli Fort area has several other water tanks that go dry during the summer months.
